One of the most awaited films of the summer is MAN OF STEEL, the latest reboot of Superman from Warner Bros. While we’ve been teased with footage since THE DARK KNIGHT RISES hit screens last July, we weren’t quite sure of MAN OF STEEL’s approach. The film is directed by Zack Snyder of 300, WATCHMEN and SUCKER PUNCH fame, so one would think big special effects and heavy reliance of mythic fantasy imagery. But then the film was also produced and overseen by Christopher Nolan, who brought a sense of realism to his DARK KNIGHT trilogy. So, which style can we expect from the new film? If this latest trailer is any indication, a little of both.
This is our first glimpse of the story approach and this retelling of Superman’s origin may be even more epic and drawn-out than we previously expected. We start with a few images of baby Superman being sent away from Krypton by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe). We then get the picture that Superman is being guided by two father figures in his life, his long-dead birth father Jor-El and his adoptive father Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner). As opposed to being about Clark Kent growing up, moving to Metropolis, getting a job at the Daily Planet and immediately setting out to save the world, we seem to be getting a more gradual and meaningful story here. It’s a story about Superman (Henry Cavill) trying to find himself before becoming the ultimate superhero, a figure that will change everything. The film is a real hero’s journey that would probably make Joseph Campbell proud.
Also in the cast are Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and most tantalizing of all, Michael Shannon as General Zod.
I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few things in this trailer that didn’t give me pause. But I love Superman. It’s the ultimate mythical figure. And my hopes remain high.
We’ll find out for sure when MAN OF STEEL save the day on June 14, 2013.
