Believe it or not, there was a time when there was no STAR WARS. After RETURN OF THE JEDI wrapped, there was nothing aside from a couple EWOK movies that were made to television. That and a couple of Saturday morning cartoons. My point being that no one really counted them. Then, Lucas approved a series of new STAR WARS novels, starting with a trilogy by Timothy Zahn and of course then expanding into a field so vast, not even Lucas could keep up with them. Since then, there has been a steady stream of one thing or another, up to and including the STAR WARS prequels and the CLONE WARS television series.
Now, Disney announces that in addition to a new STAR WARS trilogy, there will be additional spin-off features. I guess Disney is serious about getting their money’s worth as soon as possible. These will be standalone films said to expand the mythos of the STAR WARS gallery, as if it weren’t pretty darn expansive already.
There are currently two spin-off films in the works. The first is to be written by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK as well as RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. The second will be penned by Simon Kinberg (SHERLOCK HOLMES, MR. & MRS. SMITH). The current plan is to release the films sometime after EPISODE VII.
Disney has confirmed the development of the two new films. There is no word as to which characters or events these will follow. Given the early development stage and the people involved in the production, expect details to stay under wraps for a long time yet.
★★★★ UPDATE!!! ★★★★
Well, that didn’t last long. Entertainment Weekly says that they do in fact know what the subjects of the new standalone films will be. And it looks like Disney are going to two of the most popular established characters in the franchise.
Are you ready for your Han Solo and Boba Fett films?
More specifically, EW says that the films will be prequels. Each film will deal with the origins of either the Han Solo and Boba Fett characters. People in the know will note that we saw Boba Fett as a kid in ATTACK OF THE CLONES and the initial plan was to have a young Solo fighting alongside Wookies in REVENGE OF THE SITH. Here’s hoping the jettison references to these ridiculous plotlines – a possibility given Lucas’ scaled down involvement.
The Han Solo film is said to take place in between REVENGE OF THE SITH and STAR WARS (I refuse to call it A NEW HOPE, deal with it.). The Boba Fett film would take place between STAR WARS and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Basically, each film seems to take us up to the moments before the characters were introduced in the original trilogy.
Other possibilities being thrown around in the article – with no confirmation – is that the Fett film could take place between EMPIRE and RETURN OF THE JEDI. Or that each film could lead to appearances by Darth Vader or Jabba the Hutt.
All of this information is preliminary. But we do know the direction in which they are heading, which is frankly more than we thought we’d have at this point.
