Tarantino May Be Heading Back to WWII

23TARANTINO_SPAN-articleLargeHere we go again. Every few years, we’re fortunate enough to have a new Quentin Tarantino movie. And every few years, people ask him what he plans to do next. And since Quentin Tarantino has never been someone short on ideas or verbosity, we hear about all these projects in the works.

Tarantino tells The Root that he may be doing another film based in World War II. It would be a historical action flick and would complete his unofficial trilogy that started with INGLORIOUS BASTERDS and continued with DJANGO UNCHAINED (read Austin’s review here).

The storyline comes from an idea Tarantino had when he initially planned INGLORIOUS BASTERDS as a miniseries. When that became a feature film and the focus had to be honed down, this storyline got cut but could easily be made into its own film.

It involves a platoon of African-American soldiers, shortly after the Normandy invasion on D-Day. “My original idea for INGLORIOUS BASTERDS way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f–ked over by the American military and kind of go apes–t,” Tarantino said in what is promoted as part one of a three part interview (Wow, another trilogy?). “They basically — the way Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) and the Basterds are having an ‘Apache resistance’– [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland.”

A possible working title for the film is KILLER CROW. Tarantino said some of the INGLORIOUS BASTERDS group would be in it, but he did not specify which ones.

While this sounds very exciting and we love reporting on it, we also have to throw a little cold water on this. There have been numerous projects that Tarantino has talked about making. But when he finally makes a film, it is a monumental undertaking and he has to weigh what he has story-wise with what he can do. This is why THE VEGA BROTHERS will not get made, nor will a third installment of KILL BILL that was teased around the time those films were released.

Still, let’s hope for the best. Because regardless of what happens, it’s always great to see Tarantino back in action.
