The teaser trailer has just been released for STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS, the sequel to J. J. Abrams’ alternate timeline reboot of the franchise.
As he has done on previous projects, Abrams is keeping details about the new TREK film close to the vest. The only thing we know for sure is that the crew of the Enterprise returns and faces a new villain (the wonderfully-named Benedict Cumberbatch – SHERLOCK) who possesses a deadly weapon. In other words, the plot your could apply to most of the TREK films up to this date, although we’re sure Abrams has a few tricks up his sleeve. He always does.
Despite internet chatter, Cumberbatch’s villain has not been named. Rumors that he is playing the classic villain Khan are just that – rumors.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood are all returning for the second film. The talented Alice Eve (MEN IN BLACK III, THE RAVEN, SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE) is also joining the Enterprise crew. According to reports, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET alum Heather Langenkamp also has a small role.
From the looks of the trailer, STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS looks even bigger, more epic and more action packed than the original. We’ll find out when the new film opens May 17. 2013.
UPDATE!!! – JoBlo has just posted the Japanese teaser to YouTube. It’s still in English with Japanese subs. But what makes this more intriguing is that it contains an extra few seconds of footage at the end not in the American cut. It seems Abrams already pulled a sneaky one on the internet. Things are still vague, but the new footage does tease the possible motivations for Cumberbatch’s character.
