Matt Reeves to Helm APES Sequel

Transcript from Episode 53 of the Film Geek Central podcast, May 2010:

Scott: Now there’s going to be a film called RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Austin: That’s gonna suck.

Scott: What’s that? You think it’s going to suck?

Austin: That’s gonna suck.

Scott: …The apes are going to be CG animated this time, which is another thing not to be excited about.

Austin: Yeah, it’s going to be horrible. I’m not excited at all.

Scott: There is a story that I think would be cool to tell, but I don’t think this is a good one.

Boy, we sure called that one, didn’t we?

Yes, part of reporting on these things means admitting when you were wrong. Of course, the film we were talking about eventually became RISE OF THE APES. It was well received by audiences and critics alike (Austin wound up highly recommending it, incidentally) and the CGI apes wound up containing some of the most impressive motion capture performances to date.

The sequel, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, is now getting off the ground with Matt Reeves signed onto direct the follow-up. Reeves is a director I personally have been impressed with. He directed the found footage monster movie, CLOVERFIELD and did a good job. Where he really excelled for me was in the unenviable task of remaking LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, one of the best films of the last decade. His LET ME IN turned out to be a thoughtful retelling of the original story, just from a different point of view.

The Hollywood Reporter states that original director Rupert Wyatt left the project in September. While he initially wanted to direct the sequel to his surprise hit, he was reportedly uncomfortable with making the May 23, 2014 release date.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will pick up where the original left off, with the apes ready to take over as a dominant species even as a virus continues to plague humanity. Andy Serkis will return in the role of Caesar and Scott Z. Burns (THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, CONTAGION) has written the latest draft of the script.
